He announced his diagnosis in 2011, finished his Goodbye Tour in 2012, then returned to the studio while he still could. His wife Kim later said there was a growing urgency to capture “what magic was left.” Those recordings became Adiós. The album was released on June 9, 2017. It included songs Glen had loved for years, with help from Willie Nelson and Vince Gill. On “Postcard From Paris,” his children Cal, Shannon and Ashley joined him, singing, “I wish you were here.” Then, on August 8, Glen died in Nashville. He was 81. Adiós had been out for exactly 60 days. For two months, Glen Campbell was still here while an album called “Goodbye” carried his voice forward. Then the title stopped sounding like a title.

Nashville eventually pulled him back. In 1974, “I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me” became his first country No. 1. The hits kept coming. The marriage did too. Don and Joy raised two sons and remained together until his death on September 8, 2017. He was 78. Don Williams spent decades singing quietly about love. The longest love story he ever lived never needed a microphone.

The family came. “When he finally did go, it was very peaceful,” Ashley later recalled. “We just sat with him and held his hand.” Glen died on August 8, 2017. He was 81. After everything the family had been through with Alzheimer’s, Ashley’s memory of the end was surprisingly simple. They were all there. And they held his hand.
