When 26-year-old Jamal Roberts stepped onto the American Idol stage during season 23, the physical education teacher from Crestwood Elementary School in Meridian, Mississippi brought something special that captivated both the judges and viewers. His soulful rendition of Rick James’ classic hit “Mary Jane” didn’t just showcase his vocal abilities—it revealed an authentic performer with natural storytelling talent.

Music legend Lionel Richie was visibly impressed, noting, “You have the voice and you know how to tell a story”—high praise from someone who’s mastered the art himself. Luke Bryan connected with Jamal’s genuine approach, highlighting the sincerity that shone through his performance. Meanwhile, country superstar Carrie Underwood offered valuable advice, encouraging the teacher to embrace more confidence while commanding the stage.

Despite his day job shaping young minds through physical education, Roberts proved he has the musical chops to make a significant impact in the competition, representing both his hometown and profession with remarkable talent and heart.

During Hollywood Week, Jamal continued to wow the audience and judges with his performance of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart.” Lionel Richie commented, “Somewhere between the last time we heard you and now, God gave you something amazing.” ​
