Brooks & Dunn Break History with Record-Breaking CMA Win
Brooks & Dunn have officially rewritten country music history, becoming the artists with the most Country Music Association Award wins of all time. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the iconic duo earned their 16th CMA Award for Duo of the Year, bringing their career total to an unprecedented 20 wins.
This monumental achievement arrives just one year after they pulled ahead of Vince Gill in the all-time standings. Their reign, however, briefly came under threat when Chris Stapleton tied their record with 19 wins in 2024. But with Stapleton nominated in three categories this year and leaving without a win, Brooks & Dunn now stand alone at the top.
A Moment of Reflection After Three Decades Together
After accepting their award, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn took a moment to reflect on what the milestone means after more than 30 years in the industry.
Dunn shared an emotional message: “I know Kix and I have been around for a long time and Leanne [Morgan] just tripped a little trigger when she said she was postmenopausal, I think we are too. I’m a little emotional right now. Every night at these sold out shows, y’all, it’s surreal to us. People come up and Kix will go, ‘How many of you are first-time Brooks & Dunn fans at the show?’ and 80% of the audience are raising their hands. So, we’ll take this and try to make you proud, okay?”
Brooks added with characteristic humor and gratitude, “I heard earlier tonight, ‘Y’all ever get sick of this?’ Oh, hell no, man. This is too good. Thank you very much.”
The Future of Brooks & Dunn: New Music on the Horizon?
Although the duo has not released an album of entirely new material since Cowboy Town in 2007, they revisited their classic catalog with two Reboot albums in 2019 and 2024, featuring refreshed versions of their greatest hits.
In a May conversation with Billboard, Brooks hinted that new music may be closer than fans think. “We’re kicking along. We’re working on it, we’re pushing that row. We’ve got a label that we had a really great meeting with,” he said. “They can’t make us make a record, but they would love to see us do it. They don’t want to put out a record that’s not a great record.”
Dunn echoed the sentiment with optimism, adding, “I still think we have the juice to be able to sell a new one. I just want to put one more through the goal posts.”
As Brooks & Dunn celebrate this historic milestone, fans can’t help but hope that another chapter of new music is on the way—one worthy of the legacy that just earned them their place at the top of CMA history.
